It isn’t hard to find scientific studies on CBD. Thanks to its high safety profile and powerful benefits, it’s made its way into clinical research projects all over the world.

Still, however, many people will tell you that CBD doesn’t work. It’s a scam just to take your money, they say. Well, here are six scientific CBD studies that validate CBD’s beneficial properties.

CBD works by enhancing the healthy functioning of the endocannabinoid system, which is why it has such a wide range of beneficial properties.

These studies cover several of CBD’s different beneficial properties, however, further research is required to validate CBD’s effect on any specific medical health problem.

Top 6 Scientific Studies on CBD

CBD and Inflammation Study

This NIH study was conducted at the University of South Carolina and lays out the case for CBD and other cannabinoids as novel anti-inflammatory drugs.

The study explores cannabinoids, including CBD, and the pathways by which they work to reduce inflammation.

As the paper discusses, previously conducted studies on conditions such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, colitis, and hepatitis showed that cannabinoids improved disease-related symptoms related to inflammation via,

“…induction of apoptosis in activated immune cells, suppression of cytokines and chemokines at inflammatory sites and upregulation of FoxP3+ regulatory T cells.”

CBD and other cannabinoids activate what’s known as retrograde signaling, which in turn triggers anti-inflammatory pathways that may relieve inflammation-related symptoms.

CBD and Liver Study

This study conducted on mice gives great insight into what CBD’s beneficial properties can offer alcoholics with unhealthy diets and liver damage.

In an animal experiment, researchers simulated the effects of alcohol abuse alongside a high-fat diet, which is a very common lifestyle for many westerners.

They discovered that CBD reduced the expression of macrophages in the liver. These are primary immune system cells that trigger inflammation and are responsible for devouring unwanted compounds in the body associated with infection.

Previous studies by the same team of researchers revealed that CBD improves inflammatory damage to the liver that is related to NAFLD, Non-Alcoholic Fatty-Liver Disease.

They may be on to something in regards to how CBD helps to protect the liver from inflammation, but further research will be required to validate CBD’s potential to treat any specific medical conditions.

CBD and Brain Function Study

This systematic review conducted at the Department of Psychiatry in the Netherlands studied CBD’s impact on the brain function of people diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder, including anxiety disorders.

Interestingly, they also focused on studies that compared CBD’s effects with THC in people with. The researchers found 194 relevant studies in their review, of which only 17 met inclusion criteria.

All of the included studies tested CBD’s effects on human brain function in resting states as well as in the context of cognitive tasks.

Their work highlights many of the beneficial outcomes for patients with psychiatric and anxiety disorders, including addiction, as well as the need for further research.

CBD triggers healthy activity in the regions of the brain associated with addiction, anxiety, and psychosis, and researchers are hopeful it can offer new treatments.

However, since each person responds differently to CBD, researchers are looking for better ways to identify those who may benefit most from CBD.

CBD and Skin Study

CBD holds powerful properties that benefit skin health in numerous ways.

This paper published in the journal, Clinical, Cosmetic, and Investigational Dermatology explains the benefits of CBD and other cannabinoids for a variety of skin issues and conditions.

Skin health is regulated by endocannabinoids in the skin, including healthy growth and skin cell death.

The researchers point out that CBD shows some benefits to painful, itchy, inflamed skin problems, but more research is required to understand the full scope of effects that may occur with taking CBD topically.

CBD and Anxiety Study

This is a very popular study on CBD in humans with social anxiety disorder and a fear of public speaking. Social anxiety disorder is very common and impairs healthy social life.

To test the patients, the researchers had them complete a simulated public speaking test. The study divided 24 patients with SAD into two groups. One group received 400mg of CBD and the other group received a placebo.

According to the study, “Pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in their speech performance, and significantly decreased alertness in their anticipatory speech. The placebo group presented higher anxiety, cognitive impairment, discomfort, and alert levels when compared with the control group.”

CBD and Sleep Study

This study on CBD and sleep involved multiple research departments at the University of São Paulo in Brazil.

It outlines the beneficial anti-anxiety and calming properties of CBD that may benefit sleep, but primarily focuses on testing the safety of taking CBD for sleep.

They also discuss the need for better sleep medicines, particularly for older people suffering neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease.

The researchers tested CBD in healthy volunteers and used polysomnography, a multi parameter scientific test to study sleep.

They concluded that CBD is well-tolerated, appears to be very safe for sleep, and doesn’t interfere with sleep architecture in healthy individuals. Of course, however, further research is warranted to adequately elucidate the full spectrum of CBD’s effects on sleep.
